She wanted to be a teacher, from the very beginning. She had no other dream. The fortune or misfortune of an early marriage did not deter her to pursue her dream. She had a rather unusual way of attending her classes at the Trinity College of Quezon City (now Trinity University of Asia), where she was taking the course Bachelor of Secondary Education, major in Guidance Counseling. After her husband had fetched her five-year old daughter at a nursery school, he will leave her at the College, where the girl joins all the classes of her mother, sometimes playing, sleeping, making jokes or scribbling. The way home is a two-hour bus ride where mother and daughter were standing amidst the foulest of all human scents.
Well, I was the daughter. And the soon-to-be-teacher was my mother. We endured the same trials and difficulties during the next three years, until my mother reached her dream, graduating cum laude. I could remember her bright smiles full of hope and promise for a dream fulfilled that would make a difference in her life and the life of her family.
While reviewing for her licensure examinations, my mother was actually pregnant with my little brother. It was a difficult pregnancy, but, with God's help, she was able to pass the examinations.
Her first stint at the corridors of the teaching profession was very traumatic, in a way. She was also already actually reporting as a Guidance Counselor of a High School in Quezon City when the Division Superintendent called her and threw in her presence her documents saying that she did not authorize her appointment. Since then, my mother never ever dared entertaining the thought that she will ever become a teacher.
But necessity and fate often conspire. Back in South Cotabato, the time came when my mother, in dire need of an employment, had hold on to what she had: her teaching profession. And so, having been convinced by my father she tried her luck in a high school in Surallah. At the onset, it seems everything was going well. But later, she gradually discovered the ugly face that lurks in every nook and cranny of the Department of Education. Torn between her sense of decency and her desperate need for some earnings to augment the family income, she agonized for the right decision.
In the end, she decided where her heart truly belongs: the side of decency, honesty, honor and integrity. She refused to tow the line, despite the fact that the bets position that must be taken under the circumstances is to beg for mercy from the powers that be. She sided with truth, and all hell turned loose.
At the ranking, she established that one of the two interviewees gave her a score either of zero or one out of twenty. It was meant to bring her down the overall ranking ladder, because the powers that be promised to give the first three regular items to the first three. However, with God's providence, my mother still ranked number three in the overall ranking, which left the powerful ones in a quandary. They have to change their declarations and reasons again and again in order to exclude my mother.
Of course, they had their way. And when classes for school year 2002-2003 began, my mother lost all hopes that she may become a part of the teaching staff of the school.
A fighting woman that she is, she brought her struggle to the division office. There, she discovered that the higher officials did not really know what was happening at the school, that they have received distorted facts about the problems in the school. She explained everything to proper authorities, who in the end, worked for a slot at the Provincial School Board for my mother.
My mother then became a PSB-paid teacher at that school. She accepted the PSB slot although she had, by right, a claim on the third regular national item. Of course, the higher authorities promised the fourth item would automatically be given to her.
Things changed. After waiting for months, she had learned that some people again manipulated the items and that the next regular item was not given to her as promised. They gave reasons that appear to be illogical.
Dismayed, there were several nights when she could help but pray and cry. A spark of hope appeared just in time when she heard that the Guidance Counselor at SUNAS has just retired and that there is vacancy for the position she had. My mother immediately applied for the position upon hearing the news. It was her who got the position out of the three people who applied.
Today is my mother's fifth year as a Guidance Counselor at Surallah National Agricultural School. Who said that more tears are shed for prayers that were answered? It may be true now for my mother.
I admire my mother. She could go on fighting for her rights, specifically, for her right to be a teacher. She believes that she could be a teacher, and remains to be one, even without compromising her principles, her dignity and her self-respect. She could proudly proclaim to the whole world that she became the Guidance Counselor at SUNAS without having to make sipsip, bootlick, bribe, or impress the powers that be. She walks the school grounds with head high.
If there's a clash of egos today, keep your head down and mind your own business.
In Detail
There
could be a clash of the titans today, so keep your head down and mind
your own business. Getting caught up in a power struggle between two
giant personalities would not be a good move. Even if you try to stay
objective, it simply won't be possible -- at some point, you'll end up
with your back up against the wall. If someone asks you to get
involved, you should say no and accept the consequences.
-O-O-O-O-
Indeed,
that's true. We just had a class debate this morning and two of my
classmates agued with each other regarding the subject matters, Good
thing I didn't join the collition of these two titans... lolz^^ But
it's nice to listen to their points and comments..
This is a very romantic Visayan song, the lyrics are in Cebuano, one of
the major Filipino dialects here in the Philippines. I can understand a
bit of it... I can't get the meaning of other words... because they're
not familiar to me, although my mother's Cebuano... Anyways, I have
heard this song many times and it's really romantic... Even if you
don't know the meaning of its lyrics, you can still understand that the
song's about LOVE..

A cloudy Wednesday afternoon it was. That day, I slept at 3 o'clock in the morning after I decided that I need some rest although I haven't finished the PowerPoint presentation that we are going to use for our defense. (Good thing I've finished our business plan earlier.) Though I slept for only two hours, I didn't feel tired that day...
The many sleepless nights because of the projects are worth the reward we've received. The broken but then later mended friendship among the team members pays it off. The misunderstandings, the mean words that have been said... I learned more, not only about the scope of our project which is Strategic Management and E-Commerce.
We had a great time working together for the last hours... And the fruits of our labor made everyhing worthwhile...

The sheer volume of anime titles available, as well as the cultural,
language, and geographical barriers, have resulted always in a solid
set of titles that will find a strong following in some niche of
English-language fandom. Outside of this following, however, these
shows may as well not exist. The plethora of commercial companies is
slowly reducing this set, but long-time fans will recognize "hidden"
titles such as C ITY HUNTER, LEGEND OF GALACTIC HEROES, DEN'EI SHOUJO (VIDEO GIRL), ROSE OF VERSAILLES, and MARMALADE BOY. Now, FUSHIGI YUUGI
(Wondrous Play) appears to be following this route to "obscure
popularity". Indeed, until about a year ago, it was almost impossible
to find the manga volumes in (North American) Japanese bookstores!
F USHIGI YUUGI is an eighteen volume manga series by Watase Yuu that has been running in Shogakukan's
Flower Comics since 1988 and just recently ended this year. After seven
years as a successful manga title, Shogakukan, TV Tokyo, and Studio
Pierrot funded a 52 episode TV series, based on the first thirteen
manga volumes, for the spring 1995 release schedule. After hitting its
stride, FUSHIGI YUUGI consistently scored ratings in the 8 to 9 range. (For comparison, only highly successful titles like SAILOR MOON will earn ratings above the 12 to 14 range, while eternal mainstay SAZAE-SAN is the only show to consistently score over 18. Median ratings are about 6 to 7. Ratings are from NEWTYPE
magazine.) As of 25 September, the entire series is now available in
two laser disk box sets. The anime incarnation begins its second life
with the release of the first OVA volume on 25 October. And for those
absolute die-hard fans, a one-shot OVA FUSHIGI YUUGI SPECIALshipped this summer, on 25 July.
When
the nation is threatened with destruction, opening the portal from
another world a young girl shall appear to gain the power of the Suzaku.
Story
Junior high students and best friends Yuuki Miaka and Hongo Yui encounter a mysterious book, THE FOUR GODS OF THE EARTH AND SKY,
while at the library. The opening lines of the book explain that it is
the legendary story of a young girl transported to a faraway land, and
that it is also an incantation to make the story real. Once they read
past this introduction, they are instantly transported into the world
of the book, ancient China. They are accosted by a small band of
ruffians only to be rescued by a charming young man, who almost
immediately asks for payment in return. Since they are modern Japanese
students, they certainly do not have the appropriate payment. As Miaka
watches him walk away in disappointment, Yui disappears and is
transported back to the modern world, whereupon she resumes reading the
book.
Yui quickly realizes that Miaka is actually
experiencing the events she is reading about in the book. She gradually
comes to realize that she is magically linked to Miaka, but does not
understand why. When she reads about a wound that Miaka suffers, Yui is
shocked to discover blood on her own clothing; when Miaka becomes sick,
Yui also suffers the fever. Miaka, left alone and not knowing that Yui
is back safe in the present, desperately searches for her missing
friend. In the process, she is once again rescued by the young man,
Tamahome, whom she accuses of kidnapping Yui. After she cajoles
Tamahome into helping her find Yui, they are captured by the emperor's
men when Miaka boldly and stupidly approaches his imperial entourage
asking for some of the emperor's money. In doing so, Miaka trips and
falls over the guards while chasing the emperor's coach. But, rather
than suffer some ignominious fate, Miaka is eventually recognized by
the emperor, Hotohori, as Suzaku no Miko, the legendary savior and
protectress of the country.
To
return home, Miaka must gain the power of Suzaku, the god of the
southern sky, which means she must assemble the seven seishi of Suzaku
and then perform a summoning ceremony using the scroll of THE FOUR GODS OF THE EARTH AND SKY.
If the ceremony is successful and Suzaku appears, Suzaku no Miko will
be granted the power to fulfill three wishes. Tamahome and Hotohori are
the first two Suzaku seishi; with their help, Miaka must find the other
five.
Romantic complications help propel the story. A
triangle soon arises between Miaka, Tamahome, and Hotohori. These
relationships are further complicated by the introduction of a third
seishi, Nuriko. Nuriko is a recently arrived court princess, who has
her own inclinations toward Hotohori, as well as some more private
surprises. That she finds herself competing for the handsome emperor's
attention with this strange newcomer does not make for a good start to
their relationship. At the outset, Nuriko mercilessly persecutes Miaka
and tries to seduce Tamahome to make Miaka jealous. Once she sees that
Miaka is drawn toward Tamahome over Hotohori, she is able to treat her
more appropriately, though she still teases Miaka the most out of all
her seishi.
Yui is also developing feelings for Tamahome, no
doubt in partial concordance with Miaka's own feelings. When a gravely
ill Miaka temporarily returns to the modern world, Yui finds herself
drawn into the book, only she appears in Kutou country, which is
currently warring against Konan. She is also assaulted, but her rescuer
is the manipulative and devious Nakago. To say that Nakago is the
complete opposite of Tamahome is an understatement, and his
manipulations of Yui, combined with her own feelings for Tamahome,
drive her to become Seiryuu no Miko and directly oppose her best friend. Mythology
T HE FOUR GODS OF THE EARTH AND SKY
is an allusion to the Chinese mythos which divides the earth and sky
into four domains based on the four cardinal directions and the Chinese
ancient elements. Each domain is represented by three of the twelve
signs of the Chinese horoscope, and each of the four sections of the
sky contains seven constellations representing the seven seishi of the
corresponding god.

west

There is also a fifth element, metal, which represents the center.
Unlike Western and Middle Eastern cultures, China does not have an air
or wind element.
Since the orientation of the stars has not
changed much in the last thousand years, it should come as no surprise
that there is great overlap between the 28 star patterns of the
Universe of the Four Gods and the more familiar western zodiac. Indeed,
only Leo and Pisces are not represented. In modern parlance, Suzaku's
section of the sky is the Hydra Region, with five of the seven seishi actually sitting in the star patterns of the ancient Hydra (and three in the modern Hydra).
The two illustrations here show the patterns which represent the seven
Suzaku seishi. The first, with Miaka in the center, is a stylized map
of the Suzaku region, with Chichiri in the east (the top), followed by
Tamahome, and the remaining five in the Hydra Region, terminating with
Chiriko. The second is simply a cross-reference to map each seishi with
his or her corresponding pattern. Savvy skywatchers may be able to
match Tamahome to the faint Cancer, Mitsukake to Corvus, or, more
impressively, remap the lines of Chichiri to the more familiar Gemini.
The character guide references all 28 star patterns.
Once
upon a time, there was one very unlucky young man. No job, no
girlfriend, no sense of direction. But no matter how unlucky he might
be, he never lost his love for animals. There's a special place in his
heart for each and every single pet he had during his childhood. But
one day, just after failing another job interview, a street fortune
teller informs him his luck will soon change. Accustomed to his unlucky
life, he doesn't believe a word she says, but soon enough, he finds her
words echoing true! What single guy would object to having three pretty
girls arrive in his room unexpectedly?
Some
things bothered me these past few weeks. Because of that, I realized
several things. First, that I have an attitude problem. That when I am
angry, I am capable of doing “bad” things and saying “hurting” words to
other people, especially to my friends. That is something I have to
change. Hmm… Maybe I should take up anger management sessions.
I
seldom get fuming. When I’m mad, there’s always a reason. It’s not true
that I just start to freak out and destroy other people’s moods for no
grounds at all although sometimes, the cause is not very sensible. I
let small things irritate me. Then I speak aloud or shout (acting the extremely opposite of the “normal” me),
I sound like an angry dog ready to bite a person at any second or
worse, like wild tigress. And I hurt other people through my words (and
my actions).
That
Friday is one of the worst days I had. I did not think first before I
said or did something. I let the anger overcome me. I can’t even recall
all the things I uttered and the way I acted that time. Others are
afraid of me. They find it hard to approach me and ask for my help in
our school projects. Someone even called me as “Si naghambal sang ‘O! Ikaw na lang himo!”
It’s true. I did say that (after thinking for a long time if I really
did) but I was not serious when I said that. I don’t feel bad about the
person who said that. They may consider it childish and stupid,
re-enact what I did and said that day and gossip about what I did over
and over again, I won’t feel terrible because I know that what I have
done is wrong and irrational. I deserve it. I just have to bear in mind that I should not be that enraged again.
It’s
easy for people to realize their mistakes (because people are capable
of distinguishing what is right from wrong). But in the same way as it
is hard for people to forgive someone who have done wrong to them, it’s not easy to ask forgiveness and admit your mistakes to someone you have done wrong. You have to swallow your pride and say “I’m sorry”
sincerely. When I had the chance, I decided to grab it. And I said it.
It may sound hypocritical to them but God knows how apologetic I was.
Nobody (of people I met in college) has seen me cry until then.
Yet looking at the brighter side, I gained knowledge about a lot of things. Here are some of them:
That
the ONLY friend who will always be there for me, Who will not cut off
our bond of friendship just because I hurt Him, Who will try to
understand and forgive me when I ask for His forgiveness and admit my
mistakes to Him, Who will accept me for who I am no matter what, Who
will always love me unconditionally is GOD.
Think first before trusting somebody. He/she may use what you have said to him/her against you someday.
People are narrow-minded sometimes. They’re also self-centered, always thinking about their selves.
Some people enjoy the pleasure of gossips. It’s like nothing in the world could make them happier than sharing a gossip with their gossip-loving friends.
Always say “thank you”, “please”, “opo” or “po”, “ate” or “kuya”
(to those older than you). Some people consider it as their only
measure of respect. So don’t forget to respect people. It’s very
important.
Talk to people in the most polite way.
Just because you have maids at home, some people may think you are
talking to them as if they’re your maid if you don’t talk to them in
the nicest way.
Never forget the age difference
between you and a friend. If your friend’s older than you and you both
encounter an argument, he/she may ask you to face the fact that – “Hey! Respect! Remember I was born to this earth earlier than you!”
I am not in this world to live up to your expectations. You are not in this world to live up with mine. You are you and I am I… You know the rest of it.
You don’t need to satisfy other people. Just enjoy what you are doing.
People
can’t judge you because they (and even your friends) don’t know you.
They may assume whatever they want to assume about you and your
attitude. But they can’t judge you because they’re more ignorant than a
pig (the pig’s an intelligent animal) when it comes to knowing you.
Sometimes, people you call friends are those who can’t understand you.
I
may be like this, and like that… But never say where I will end up with
because today is where my book begins, you’re not the author of the
book – and the rest is still unwritten!
Think first before you say something. You cannot easily get back the words that have been said.
It’s
nice to have a few close friends whom you can always hang out with. But
it’s also nice to learn about other people, not always focusing on your
own set of friends. There are a lot of interesting people around you,
just open your eyes you’ll see.
When
your friends say you don’t respect them, it’s not true. How come you
became friends if there’s no respect among you? Unless they’re not
really your friends… Hmmm…
Some
people are capable of pushing their friends away. Some people are
capable of cutting the bond of friendship between them and their
friends.
The worst thing people could do to their friends is to consider them as strangers.
People who speak about other people have small minds.
When people think that you’re intelligent, be proud of it. Then be kind. Think that they’re intelligent people, too.
To
win friends, you don’t have to let them copy your assignments and other
school works. You’re not winning real friends that way.
Stop the drama! Get real. Be sincere. Talk to people.
Be thankful that the cellphone
is invented. If you want to say something to a person, do it through
your cellphone. It’s just a text message away. Tell everything through
text. After all, you don’t have the courage to tell it personally.
Acceptance. A real friend accepts your shortcomings.
Sometimes for some people, “sorry” is not enough. For others, it’s more than enough.
When
people talk, it’s not your responsibility to listen to them, especially
if you have already heard about it. You have the option not to listen.
People
may advise you. Tell you things that you should do. But seeing their
actions, it’s as if they never heard themselves, doing the exact
opposite of the advices they’ve given to other people.
You can’t please everybody. Now that is a fact.
People can’t watch each and every word they say. They’re driven by emotions most of the time. We just need to understand that.
Not
because terrible things have happened mainly because of what I’ve done,
the world will stop. It will never stop. Life has to continue. I am
happy I learned a lot of things.
